Melbourne City vs Newcastle Jets A-League Preview and Team News - Jets aiming for consecutive wins over City for the first time since 2013

  • Melbourne City host Newcastle Jets in Round 6 of the A-League on Sunday night
  • Jets won their last clash in the 2017/18 elimination finals

Newcastle Jets target back-to-back wins for the first time this season when they take on a disjointed Melbourne City outfit to conclude A-League Round 6 action on Sunday night.

A rematch of last season’s elimination final awaits at AAMI Park on Sunday night as Melbourne City play host to the Newcastle Jets.

City will be out to avenge their defeat to the Jets in that unforgettable encounter, which made worldwide headlines after Riley McGree’s (who has since signed with City) extraordinary scorpion kick cancelled out Bruno Fornaroli’s opener before Jason Hoffman fired home the winner to propel Newcastle into the Grand Final.

Fornaroli has been in the headlines for the last two weeks after City coach Warren Joyce controversially left him out of the squad that lost 2-0 to Brisbane in Round 5, citing the Uruguayan’s poor commitment to training as the reason for his omission.

Fornaroli has been left out of City’s squad again, with fans set to protest by sitting down during the game and refusing to sing their standard City chants, while the official supporters group has called for Joyce to be sacked.

Suffice to say, City are under immense pressure at the moment - can Newcastle take advantage?

It’s been a challenging start to the new campaign for the Jets, with Roy O’Donovan’s suspension and an injury to Joey Champness meaning they are short on troops up front, with Brazilian import Jair yet to really get going this season.

Right-back turned striker Hoffman is the man leading the line and he got on the scoresheet again last as the Jets registered their first win of the season, beating the Wanderers 2-0 after Ronny Vargas iced the game in injury time.

Despite the win, coach Ernie Merrick said he wasn’t impressed with his side’s performance and is still seeking significant improvement heading into this encounter.

City have a great recent record over the Jets, losing just one of their last 10 meetings, but that came in their last clash, while the club are all over the place on an off the field at the moment. If the Jets can defend well, they just might be able to carve out a rare win over City in Melbourne.
