City and Victory clash on Friday

Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory square off in the third and final regular season derby of the season when the two bitter rivals launch A-League Round 22 action on Friday night at AAMI Park.

After splitting the first two Melbourne derby of the 2017/18 A-League season, who will claim bragging rights on Friday night as City and Victory continue their heated rivalry?

It’s a crucial clash for both sides - City can’t afford to drop any more points in their pursuit of a top two finish as the Newcastle Jets opened up an eight-point lead over them last week, while Victory need to generate some momentum in what has been an extremely inconsistent season.

Victory started last week level on points with the sixth-placed Wanderers, but a dominant 3-0 triumph over Adelaide United saw them leapfrog the Reds into fourth spot.

Another win on Friday night and Victory could close the gap on City to just one point.

City meanwhile were very disappointing in a 2-1 loss to the struggling Perth Glory last week, conceding a 97th minute winner as their top two aspirations took a big hit.

However, with the Jets facing runaway leaders Sydney on Saturday night, a win over Victory could propel City back to within five points of second spot - and they still have to take on Newcastle before the regular season finishes.

City have been able to sustain longer periods of form this season, but they are coming off a scratchy performance last week - could this be Victory’s time to shine? Kevin Muscat’s side haven’t been impressive for more than two weeks at a time this season, but last week’s big win will give huge confidence for this clash - I’m backing Victory home on Friday night.

Stats

  • City won their first meeting this season before Victory returned the favour just before Christmas
  • Three of their last four meetings have ended in a 2-1 scoreline (Victory won two of them)
  • There hasn’t been a draw in the last seven games between these teams
