Match Preview

Japan came into this World Cup as underdogs, even in a weak group that included Poland, Senegal and Colombia, Japan wasn’t given much of a chance of advancing through the group stage.

A mixture of skill and luck sees Japan almost certain to progress through to the knockout stage, only needing a draw from this final group match against Poland to advance. Japan seemed fortunate in their opener against Colombia, as they had a man red carded and gave away a penalty in the first three minutes of the match.

Japan showed their attacking prowess and grit with a 2-2 draw against Senegal. Twice Senegal struck the front, scoring first in the 11th minute and again in the 71st minute, however, Japan would not give in. A goal from Keisuke Honda in the 78th minute assured Japan that their fate would remain in their own hands.

Japan’s attacking style has been fun to watch and their captain Makoto Hasebe says they won’t be slowing down against Poland.

“I don’t think we can enter the match looking for a draw and to get the results we want”, Hasebe said.

"Although we earned four points in two matches, we haven't accomplished anything yet. The next match will be the deciding match. We must enter the match with the intention to earn three points and put the focal point on our performance."

The Poles have disappointed when the pressure has gone on and have been eliminated. They suffered a 2-1 loss to Senegal and followed that up with a terrible 3-0 defeat against Colombia. They will be playing for pride when they face Japan.

Stats

  • Japan has scored eight goals in their last three matches.
  • Poland will be looking for their first World Cup victory since beating Costa Rica 2-1 in 2006.
  • Japan aims to win two matches at a World Cup for the third time in the country's history.
