Celtic suffered a shock home defeat against Motherwell last weekend but can get back on track later today with a comfortable success away to Hearts.

With Aberdeen having recovered from their early autumn blip, Celtic are now only one point ahead at the top of the Scottish Premiership table but they do have a game in hand on the Dons who are the only team within hailing distance of them.

The gap closed last weekend when the Hoops went down 2-1 on their own pitch against Motherwell as Louis Moult’s double overturned the opener from Nir Biton.

It means that when they kick off at Tynecastle this afternoon (14:00 GMT kick-off) the Scottish champions could have been leapfrogged by Aberdeen who host Inverness Caledonian Thistle the previous day.

Hearts spent Christmas third in the table, also with a game in hand but 10 points off top spot, and apart from a poor spell either side of the season’s first international break they have acquitted themselves extremely creditably since being promoted back to the top flight last term.

They are, however, winless in their last four matches, although three of them have been drawn, which suggests that if Celtic are on their game then the points should go to Ronny Deila’s visitors.

Deila offered no excuses for losing to Motherwell and put it down to simply “a bad day at work”, being undone by counter-attacks and leaving themselves too open after going ahead rather than protecting the lead.

The Norwegian’s position is increasingly becoming in focus due to the abysmal European campaign Celtic endured this season and a group of fans have even launched a petition to get him sacked, so unless the title is retained with ease then Deila’s job could be under threat.

He still has the two domestic cups to target as well, and Celtic are through to a League Cup semi-final against Ross County after a 2-1 victory away to Sunday’s opponents Hearts.

This time we think they will prevail with a bit more comfort and whatever Aberdeen achieve on Saturday, we are convinced Celtic will still be top of the table going into their final match of 2015 away to Dundee on Wednesday.

Predictions:

Celtic -1 on the handicap @ 8/5
Leigh Griffiths first goalscorer @ 7/2
