Stade de Bordeaux is the venue for a clash of the titans in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals  as Germany and Italy lock horns for a place in the last four.

Other than the 0-0 draw with Poland, the Germans have progressed this far without too many difficulties.

The World Champions topped Group C and are yet to concede in France, while they made a big statement in their convincing 3-0 victory over Slovakia in the Last 16 on Sunday.

It is the sixth major tournament in a row that Joachim Low’s men are appearing in the Quarter-Finals, and they will be full of confidence in their quest for a fourth title – which would make them the most successful team in the history of the European Championship.

Die Mannschaft are favourites to prevail in this encounter.

They may hold a psychological advantage having beaten Italy 4-1 in a friendly three months ago, but the Azzurri have plenty of reason to be optimistic about their own chances in Bordeaux.

Antonio Conte’s men conceded just once as they topped Group E, although that goal did come against a spirited Republic of Ireland with qualification already assured, while they provided a masterclass at both ends of the field in their impressive 2-0 win over defending champions Spain in the Last 16.

The Italians dominated the Spaniards on Monday as they forced the breakthrough in the first half, before their trademark defence was solid as ever to keep their opponents at bay in the second.

They have not lost to Germany at the European Championship – notably beating them in the Semi-Finals four years ago courtesy of Mario Balotelli’s double.

The two sides have scored 11 goals between them in the tournament so far and it is hard to see them not adding to their tallies on Saturday, and both teams scoring is certainly worth a punt.

It is a very hard match to pick a winner from and the outcome could well be decided by who strikes first.

As they showed against Spain, Italy are the masters of defending a lead – the last time the Azzurri lost in a major tournament after opening the scoring was against co-hosts South Korea in the last 16 of the 2002 World Cup.

It worth backing Conte’s men to be leading at half-time before going on to secure the victory.
