Match Preview

The time is now for Belgium. The ‘golden generation’ has underperformed to date on the biggest stage, having not progressed past the quarterfinals since 1986 in Mexico. The Belgians are out to change history in Russia and they have had a perfect World Cup to date, winning all five matches.

Despite holding the mantle as the only team with a perfect record in the 2018 World Cup, Belgium still finds themselves outsiders in this contest against France. They have defeated Tunisia 5-2, England 1-0, Panama 3-0, Japan 3-2 and Brazil 2-1.

Belgium produced one of the upsets of the tournament, defeating Brazil 2-1. The Belgians stuck early, with an own goal by Fernandinho in the 13th minute and a strike from Kevin De Bruyne in the 31st minute gave Belgium a winning lead.

France are playing their way into this World Cup, in large part thanks to forwards Forwards Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe, who have both scored twice in their last two victories. The French progressed through their group in less than convincing fashion, with uninspiring victories against Peru and Australia, followed by a 0-0 draw against Denmark.

The French lifted with a 4-3 victory against Argentina, thanks to a pair of goals from Mbappe. They followed that up with a dominant 2-0 victory over Uruguay.

It’s the third time that these two teams have met in a World Cup. France has taken both matches in 1986 and 1938, however, Belgium won their last match 4-3 in a friendly back in 2015.

Stats

  • Belgium is the only team with a perfect record in the 2018 World Cup.
  • Belgium has scored 14 goals and has a +9 goal differential in five World Cup matches.
  • France has kept a clean sheet in three of their five World Cup matches.
