FA Cup Final Preview, Tips and Predictions - Arsenal v Chelsea clash at Wembley

Ross Aylward 24 May 2017
  • London rivals clash in FA Cup Final
  • Gunners aiming to stop the Blues from completing the Double

Chelsea will be aiming to complete the Premier League and FA Cup double for a second time in eight years when they face Arsenal in the final.

Arsenal upset the odds in their FA Cup semi-final and could be worth backing to do so again when they face Premier League champions Chelsea in the showdown for the trophy.

Four of England’s top five clubs this season contested the semis of the world’s oldest football knockout competition and Arsenal were the outsiders at that stage, despite having the best FA Cup record of the quartet.

And although extra time was needed, they managed to get past Manchester City with a 2-1 success thanks to a winning goal from, almost inevitably, Alexis Sanchez.

Now the Gunners are on course to lift the famous piece of silverware for a third time in four seasons and a 13th in their history, which would again put them one ahead of last season’s winners Manchester United at the top of the list of most successful clubs in the FA Cup.

The bookmakers do not fancy the chances of Arsene Wenger’s side, however, making them clear outsiders against a Chelsea team who are aiming to make sure it is just like 2010 all over again.

That was the season when an Italian manager took over the Blues and they completed the Premier League/FA Cup double for the only time in their history.

But that is exactly the scenario that could occur again seven years on, except for Carlo Ancelotti read his compatriot Antonio Conte.

It is very dangerous to oppose Chelsea because ever since they went on that fantastic 13-match Premier League winning streak up to the end of 2016, they have been the best team in England and reaffirmed as much when beating their main challenger for that status, Tottenham, 4-2 in the FA Cup semi-finals.

However, although Chelsea’s record in the FA Cup has been excellent in the last two decades with six victories, it is Arsenal who have dominated more recently.

Admittedly they were clear favourites when beating Hull and Aston Villa in the finals of 2014 and 2015, but the Gunners obviously have an affinity with this competition and look decent value not only to take the trophy home but also to prevail in 90 minutes.

FA Cup Final Stats

  • This will be the 20th FA Cup match between Chelsea and Arsenal. The Gunners have won eight and Chelsea five with six draws
  • The only previous FA Cup Final contested by both of these clubs was in 2002 when Arsenal won 2-0 with goals from Ray Parlour and Fredrik Ljungberg
  • Their most recent FA Cup meeting was in the 2009 semi-finals when goals from Chelsea’s Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba overturned the opener by Arsenal’s Theo Walcott
