Ajax and Manchester United go head to head in the Europa League final and with Champions League qualification on the line Jose Mourinho's men can edge a tense encounter in Stockholm.

Match Preview

There is more than a major European final for these teams. While it will be fantastic to add the Europa League to their honours list, it is the guarenteed prize of reaching next year's Champions League group stage that will be more attractive, particularly to Manchester United.

The Red Devils are 6th in the Premier League table after a disappointing campaign and the only way they will be back in the top European competition next season is to win on Wednesday night. This adds a whole heap of pressure on this one-off contest.

Put simply, this is the game that decides their season. Two trophies - they won the League Cup back in February - and Champions League qualification can be seen as a success. Take two of these away though, it's been a failure. One trophy and sixth place simply isn't good enough.

Let's be honest though, it would be typical for a Mourinho team to turn it on when it counts. His team have been average in the last few weeks - and during the majority of the Europa League campaign - but this by no means rules them out of beating Ajax.

While the Dutch side have lost three games on their way to the final, Manchester United have lost just once. They know how to get the job done in this competition and with key players likely to be fresh, they'll be confident of justifying their favourites tag.

As ever with Mourinho, his first though will be to keep Ajax quiet and his defensive selections to stop Kasper Dolberg will be crucial. He then needs a spark in the final third, something Marcus Rashford can provide.

Do we expect a classic? No. Do we expect the Red Devils to care? No.

Get to Stockholm and get the job done will be the message. After all, their 2016-2017 season depends on it.
