Match Preview

The Three Lions are only two matches away from the biggest sporting feat in England for over 50 years. England hasn’t made a World Cup final since winning it on home turf back in 1966.

England started their World Cup campaign in terrific fashion, with a 2-1 victory over Tunisia and a 6-1 demolition of Panama. The Three Lions suffered their only defeat of the tournament in the last match of the group stage losing 0-1 to Belgium.

England progressed in a penalty shootout against Colombia, before a comfortable 2-0 victory against Sweden saw Gareth Southgate and his men progress through to the semi final, where Croatia await.

Both teams are breaking droughts by being here in the semifinals. Croatia is in their first World Cup semi-final since 1998, while England is in their first World Cup semi-final since 1990.

Croatia looked impressive in the group stages, but haven’t been at their brilliant best since. The Croatians have needed two penalty shootouts to beat both Denmark (1-1) and Russia (2-2). This extra time on the pitch may wear on the Croats in the latter stages of their semifinal against England.

Croatia kept a clean sheet in their first two World Cup matches, but have allowed at least one goal in their last three matches. England looked strong defensively against Sweden and are likely to be the fresher team.

Stats

  • England has a +7 goal differential in their five World Cup matches .
  • Croatia has a +6 goal differential in their five World Cup matches.
  • Both teams have kept a clean sheet once only this tournament.
