Mariners host Wanderers on Sunday

Central Coast attempt to snap a nine-match losing streak when they play host to the Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday in Gosford in A-League Round 19 action.

After a promising start to the season, the Mariners have endured a catastrophic run of form that has all of a sudden seen them turn from genuine finals contenders to arguably the wooden spoon favourite.

Things were looking bright in Gosford as Central Coast established a finals spot after the first couple of months of the season - along with becoming the only team to have beaten Sydney FC this campaign.

But the Mariners’ young squad has fallen apart over the last two months, and they come into this showdown with the Wanderers without a win since December 3.

During that stretch, the Mariners went four consecutive games without scoring a goal, while they suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Brisbane Roar in their last outing, slipping to ninth spot on the table as a result - just two points above the embattled Wellington Phoenix.

Meanwhile, it’s been another up-and-down season for the Wanderers so far - especially since the holiday period.

Following a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Newcastle, the Wanderers went on a nice run of form, beating City and Brisbane to climb into the top six, but they’ve since gone on a winless run of their own, drawing their next two games with Adelaide and Wellington before leaking three goals in consecutive defeats to Victory and Glory last week.

Western Sydney still have a game in hand against Wellington, but they now find themselves outside the top six once more and level on points with Brisbane and Perth as they chase a top six spot.

Wanderers won the last game between these two sides earlier this season, and although both are in poor form at the moment, there’s no way you can back the Mariners here. There’s more upside to the Wanderers right now, so I’ll take them at value away from home.

Stats

  • Wanderers won their last clash 2-0 on December 16
  • At least one team has scored two goals in the last four meetings between the sides
  • Wanderers have won their last four games in Gosford
