Central Coast Mariners vs Sydney FC A-League Preview and Team News - Sydney set to continue dominant record over Mariners

Central Coast host Sydney on Saturday

Sydney FC aim to bounce back from their Big Blue defeat last week when they take on the struggling Central Coast Mariners on Saturday in Gosford.

With just one defeat in their last 12 encounters against the Mariners, Sydney will be confident of returning to the winners circle when the two sides meet on Saturday.

Both sides are searching for an immediate response from demoralising losses last week, with Sydney going down 2-1 to Melbourne Victory and Central Coast suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat in the final seconds to competition leaders Perth Glory.

Sydney are now without a win in their last two matches after also drawing 1-1 with Newcastle just before the international break. Steve Coria enjoyed a great start to life as an A-League manager, but his side have been a tad lacklustre in their last couple of games, and if they slip up against the Mariners, he will start to feel a bit of pressure.

Likewise, Mike Mulvey would have been encouraged by his side’s bright start to the campaign, which featured two draws against Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City, but they’ve slumped back into old habits in their last three games and have well-beaten on each occasion.

Expect some spice and plenty of goals in this encounter, with Matt Simon set to face his old club, while a total of 27 goals have been scored in their last seven meetings in Gosford, with only one clean sheet kept during that time.

As mentioned, Sydney have been the dominant side in this match-up, winning nine of the last 12 games between the sides. Central Coast are the only team yet to win this season, and I don’t see it coming against the Sky Blues on Saturday.

Stats

  • Sydney have lost just one of their last 12 meetings with the Mariners
  • Sky Blues have won nine of those games
  • Mariners have scored against Sydney in Gosford in every game since 2012
