Mariners host Glory on Sunday

Central Coast Mariners and Perth Glory look to maintain their new-found spots inside the top six when they clash on Sunday in A-League Round 9 action in Gosford.

An important game awaits the Mariners and Glory on Sunday as the two sides aim to consolidate their places in the top six.

The winning team will generate further momentum and have the opportunity to push towards the top four around the Christmas period, but the loser will likely drop out the six and face some pressure games leading into the holidays.

Central Coast have been surprisingly solid this season and they come into this showdown on the back of a thumping 4-1 victory over Wellington last week, with Daniel de Silva, Andrew Hoole and Trent Buhagiar getting on the scoresheet, alongside an own goal from Phoenix.

The Mariners are blessed with a young, fast and energetic side, and if they can get it right, they have the potential to trouble a lot of good teams this season.

Perth meanwhile had been struggling with an extremely inexperienced defence this season, but they managed to turn the tables to conquer a 10-man Melbourne City outfit 3-1 last week.

Glory are still equipped with significant attacking firepower, namely Andy Keogh, Adam Taggart and Diego Castro, but it’s defence that wins big games, and they took a step in the right direction last week - although it must be stated that City were a man short and are in a troubling period themselves.

Which makes this a big opportunity for Central Coast. Paul Okon’s side are showcasing immense improvement and are very dangerous in the final third. Defence is an issue for both teams, but I think the Mariners will have more goals in them on Sunday and emerge victorious.

Stats

  • Perth haven’t won in Gosford since 2014
  • Mariners have won two of their last three meetings
