Mariners host Victory on Saturday

Melbourne Victory will be out to extend a six-year unbeaten run against Central Coast Mariners when the two teams clash in A-League Round 17 action on Saturday in Gosford.

Central Coast are set to be in for another long afternoon in Gosford as the mighty Victory roll into town on Saturday.

Separated by 27 points on the ladder coming into this Round 17 fixture, the Mariners haven’t defeated Victory in the A-League since 2013, failing to win any of their last 16 encounters.

Furthermore, the Mariners have conceded nine goals in their last two defeats to Victory, so there’s little cause for optimism surrounding the home team on Saturday.

However, in saying that, all streaks come to an end at some point, and the Mariners have improved over the last month, scoring their first win of the season against City a couple of weeks ago, while they were unlucky to conceded an injury-time defeat to Adelaide in Round 16.

Victory meanwhile are flying high after a big 2-1 Big Blue triumph over rivals Sydney FC last week.

Star Swedish import Ola Toivonen was once again in terrific form, with the striker taking his season tally to 10 goals, while he’s also created three assists.

Four points behind competition leaders Perth, Victory know there is no room for complacency as they prepare to meet the Mariners.

All signs point to a comfortable win for the reigning champions - they’ve dominated the Mariners have the years and need all three points to keep pace with Perth.

Stats

  • Mariners haven’t beaten Victory since 2013
  • That’s a streak of 16 straight games!
  • They’ve won just two points off Victory at home during that period
