Mariners host City on Sunday

Melbourne City look to continue their push towards the top two when they take on Central Coast Mariners on Sunday in A-League Round 16 action in Gosford.

Currently trailing the high-flying Newcastle Jets by five points, City are tasked with another must-win clash against the Mariners in order to maintain pace with the top two.

Unbeaten against Central Coast in their last seven meetings, this is certainly a contest where City should prevail and continue to put the pressure on the Jets.

But are City in good form? The club has traditionally always been inconsistent, and there’s still elements of that this season, with the team falling to the Wanderers a couple of weeks ago before snatching wins against the struggling Wellington and Perth.

Another embattled team awaits on Sunday, but can City take advantage? If Ross McCormack can keep firing in the goals - he netted another brace against Glory mid-week - then they will have an excellent chance.

Meanwhile, the Mariners are faltering once more after what was a promising and encouraging start to the season that saw them sneak into the top four at one stage.

But, the fact of the matter is that Central Coast just don’t have that clinical edge. They haven’t scored in five of their last six matches, with their finishing in front of goal leaving a lot to be desired.

Truth be told, the Mariners were unlucky to lose 2-0 to rivals Newcastle on Tuesday as they dominated large chunks of the game, but after Josh Rose was sent off with 15 minutes to go, the Jets pounced and never looked back.

City have won their last three encounters and are unbeaten against the Mariners in their last seven. Central Coast’s ruthlessness in front of goals needs significant improvement, and until that happens I can’t back them again. McCormack should have another field day and propel City to victory.

Stats
