Central Coast Mariners vs Adelaide United A-League Preview and Team News - FFA Cup champions Adelaide target first win of A-League season

Mariners host Adelaide on Sunday

Adelaide United play their first match since winning the FFA Cup mid-week when they do battle against the Central Coast Mariners to conclude A-League Round 3 action on Sunday.

Just five days after securing a brilliant 2-1 victory over Sydney FC to take home the 2018 FFA Cup silverware in front of their home fans, Adelaide return to action in the A-League on Sunday against the improving Mariners in Gosford.

Craig Goodwin was the hero for Adelaide on Tuesday night, firing home a glorious free-kick and a right-footed bullet to bag a brace and propel his side to FFA Cup glory, avenging their loss to Sydney from the 2017 final.

Unbeaten this season following that triumph, a Round 1 draw with Sydney and another 1-1 stalemate with last year’s grand finalists Newcastle last week, Adelaide are confident but will be determined for three points in the A-League in order to start setting themselves up at the right end of the table.

But will the Reds be operating at the peak of their powers after their energy-sapping triumph mid-week?

It not, the Mariners are poised to take advantage. Coming into this season on the back of another woeful campaign and wooden spoon in 2017, Central Coast have gone through an enormous rebuilding phase and have basically brought in a brand new squad for this season.

Ross McCormack is the major signing, with the former Aston Villa and Melbourne City striker opening his account for the Mariners in last week’s 1-1 draw against his former club. Central Coast also registered a 1-1 draw in their opening match of the season away to Brisbane - which one of these two clubs will earn their first three points of the campaign on Sunday?

Or will we see another share of the spoils? Adelaide are so well structured and difficult to break down, but they might be feeling a bit flat after Tuesday night, while the Mariners will be out to continue their impressive form. I’m leaning more towards a draw or Mariners win to finish off Round 3.
