  • The Mariners are one of four teams yet to win in this A-League season

Sydney FC returned to top spot on the A-League ladder last week and can ensure they remain there when they travel to face Central Coast Mariners in Gosford on Friday night.

Central Coast v Sydney kicks off at 7.50pm AEST at Central Coast Stadium.

Match Preview

Sydney FC won the battle of the top two sides last week when defeating Melbourne City 1-0 on the road and get the chance to extend their advantage at the top on Friday night before their rivals play later in the weekend.

Last week, the Sky Blues displayed the resolute qualities that led them to the premiership last season when they inflicted a first defeat of the season on Melbourne City.

Luke Wilkshire's goal was enough to separate the sides as Sydney FC leapfrogged City to go top of the ladder with Graham Arnold's side still unbeaten after the opening five weeks of the season.

Central Coast Mariners collected their third point of the season from a 0-0 draw at Brisbane Roar on Sunday, but they remain without a win from the opening five games.

Paul Okon's side have certainly bounced back from the 5-1 home defeat to rivals Newcastle Jets on the opening weekend, but they have been struggling to see off teams and might well have to wait another week for that elusive victory.

That is because the Mariners have a poor record against Sydney FC, who have not lost when the two sides have met since March 2014. It is not nine games unbeaten against the Mariners, eight of which have been wins.

Sydney completed a whitewash over Central Coast last season, but have managed a clean sheet in Gosford since 2009 so it might not be as comfortable as Sky Blues fans might expect.

Stats
