Central Coast Mariners v Newcastle Jets Match Preview and Predictions - F3 derby to finish season

Gary Emmerson 13 Apr 2018
  • Newcastle Jets have lost just one of the last 10 meetings
  • But the Jets are on a three-game losing run
  • The Mariners could need a point to avoid the wooden spoon

Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets close the regular season with an F3 derby on Saturday night that could have more meaning for the home side than their rivals.

Mariners v Jets kicks off at 7.50pm AEST. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia.

Prediction

Match Preview

By the time the F3 derby gets underway, Central Coast Mariners will know if they need a result against rivals Newcastle Jets to avoid the wooden spoon.

A win for Wellington Phoenix in the earlier game against Melbourne City would leave the Mariners needing to collect a point from their final game of the season to avoid finishing in bottom spot.

Anything less than a win for Phoenix would leave Central Coast assured of ninth spot in what has been a disappointing season for the team from Gosford.

The Jets have exceeded pre-season expectations and have a home semi-final to look forward to having sewn up second spot on the ladder several weeks ago, but since then things have been very ordinary for Newcastle.

Ernie Merrick's Jets have lost the last three and are heading into the finals playing their worst football of the season and will be desperate for a positive performance from the derby with the Mariners.

Newcastle have dominated Central Coast in recent time, losing only one of the last 10 meetings and will see this as an ideal chance to return to winning ways.

The Mariners can't be relied upon of late, but neither can the Jets. So taking the value of the draw is the best option from this one and take Central Coast draw no bet as an alternative option.
