Brisbane host Sydney on Friday

Sydney FC look to narrow the gap at the top of the table when they take on the embattled Brisbane Roar in A-League Round 18 action on Friday night.

Sydney FC have a golden opportunity to launch themselves back into the race for the minor premiership when they square off against the struggling Brisbane Roar on Friday night.

With competition leaders Perth facing the second-placed Victory later in Round 18, Sydney are in with a chance of narrowing the gap to Glory and possibly leapfrogging Victory into second spot depending on the outcome.

It hasn’t been the dominant regular season that Sydney have put together across the last two campaigns, but they are still undoubtedly among the leading heavyweights for the silverware once again, and they remain on track for a top two finish.

After a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Victory on Australia Day, Sydney bounced back superbly last week to dispatch the other Melbourne team, beating City 2-0.

Meanwhile, Brisbane are still stranded on one win for the season after somehow blowing a 3-0 lead against Adelaide last week.

Reduced to nine men in the second half, Brisbane conceded just on half-time before Adelaide fired home three unanswered goals in the second stanza to register an incredible 4-3 comeback win.

It’s the sort of result and game that sums up Brisbane’s nightmare season to date, with their finals hopes slashed with 10 games remaining, leaving their primary motive as trying to avoid the wooden spoon.

With Sydney looking to avoid losing back-to-back away games in the A-League for the first time in five years, it doesn’t appear as if Brisbane are going to fare any better on Friday night. This is a game between two teams on totally opposite ends of the spectrum and ladder, and that quality should propel Sydney to victory.

Stats

  • Sydney have lost just three times against Brisbane in their last 14 meetings
  • Brisbane haven’t won since November last year
  • Sydney haven’t lost consecutive away games in the A-League since 2014
