Brisbane host Sydney on Monday night

Reigning premiers Sydney FC look to further increase their eight-point lead at the top of the table when they travel north to Suncorp Stadium to face Brisbane Roar in A-League Round 15 action on Monday night.

We’re right in the middle of the busiest period of the season, with A-League fixtures being played every other day as teams look to get the jump on others before regular scheduling resumes in a week’s time.

Sydney almost stumbled slightly on Wednesday night as they took on depleted entertainers the Newcastle Jets at Allianz Stadium.

Newcastle started with a bang and were ahead inside 10 minutes after an Andrew Nabbout strike, but Milos Ninkovic swiftly levelled the scores with a sublime solo effort. The Jets however regained the lead in the second half thanks to young Joey Champness, with Bobo saving Sydney’s graces in the dying minutes by firing home a header as the match finished in a 2-2 draw.

Just days after demolishing Perth 6-0 on the same ground, it was a timely reminder to Sydney that they won’t simply waltz to another A-League crown - which should ensure a polished performance when they face Brisbane on Sunday night.

At the time of writing, Brisbane still haven’t played their Round 14 game, which is on Friday night against the Wanderers.

It means Brisbane will only have two days to recover before welcoming the dominant competition leaders to Suncorp - certainly not ideal preparation when you consider Sydney played on Wednesday and have a couple more extra days off.

Currently languishing in eighth spot on the ladder, it’s an important three-day period for Brisbane - lose twice, and they will lose further touch with the top six, but if they can beat the Wanderers and maybe snatch something from Sydney, they could find themselves in a finals spot by the end of the game.

Brisbane have enjoyed decent success against Sydney recently - at least compared to other teams - winning at Suncorp in 2016 and drawing twice in their last four meetings, along with two other defeats. However, this Sydney team is arguably the best we’ve seen in the A-League, while Brisbane aren’t at their best - the Sky Blues should claim another three points on Monday night.

Stats

  • Brisbane and Sydney drew 0-0 in their last clash at Suncorp
  • Two of their last four meetings have ended in a draw
  • Sydney won their match earlier this season 3-1 at Allianz
