Brisbane Roar vs Perth Glory A-League Preview and Team News - Glory looking to maintain competition lead

Brisbane host Perth on Sunday

Perth Glory attempt to maintain their competition lead when they take on Brisbane Roar to conclude A-League Round 11 action on Sunday night.

Coming into the round with a three-point lead over Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC at the top of the ladder, Perth will be determined to start the new year with a bang against Brisbane and maintain or possibly extend their gap.

Glory have been the stand-out team heading into 2019, winning seven of their 10 games and losing just once to Sydney FC. Tony Popovic is enjoying a dream start to life as Perth manager and they head into this showdown on the back of a thumping 4-1 win over the Mariners on New Year’s Eve, with Fabio Ferreira and Andy Keogh each grabbing a brace.

With a clash against Sydney FC coming up mid-week, three points against a Brisbane side that has just won one game all season is a must if Perth want to keep enjoying life at the top of the A-League mountain.

Meanwhile, it’s been a dismal season for the Roar in 2018/19, with the club sitting in second last position with just one win from 10 games.

It could have been even worse for Brisbane mid-week if Newcastle hadn’t squandered a truckload of chances in front of goal, with the Roar twice coming from behind to earn a 2-2 draw and keep their slim hopes of recovering to make the finals alive.

Brisbane could leapfrog the Wanderers if they can upset the competition leaders - and they do have a great record on their own turf against Glory, losing just three times in 20 games. But, this is a different Perth outfit and Brisbane haven’t struggled like this for a while - it would be a surprise if Glory dropped points on Sunday night.

Stats

  • Glory won just three games out of 20 visits to Suncorp
  • Perth have lost 13 of the matches in that period
  • Perth won 3-2 earlier this season at nib Stadium
