Brisbane face Adelaide on Friday

Brisbane Roar target their first win of the 2017/18 A-League season when they play host to Adelaide United on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium.

After falling to a 2-0 away loss to Melbourne City last Friday night, Brisbane Roar return home to Suncorp Stadium in search of all three points as they attempt to kick-start their season against Adelaide United.

Brisbane were left to rue missing a couple of great early chances against City, with both Joe Caletti and Nick D’Agostino each coming close to giving the visitors the lead, but ultimately a Bruce Kamou brace handed City a 2-0 win and bragging rights in the first game of the new season.

There were however some promising signs for the Roar - Italian veteran striker Massimo Maccarone had some nice touches and showcased his class, while young gun D’Agostino was dangerous throughout and almost put Brisbane ahead in the first 20 minutes, only to see his shot bounce off the post.

“It was disappointing to concede a goal just before half-time, it was one we should have done better on,” Brisbane coach John Aloisi said.
“We started to control the second half and we got into good areas. We probably just lacked that sharpness in the final third."

Meanwhile, Adelaide will also be aiming to bag their first victory of the season after being held to a 1-1 draw across the ditch by Wellington Phoenix.

While the Reds couldn’t claim all three points, it was a solid performance away from home, with Danish winger Johan Absalonsen producing a superb performance and scoring on his A-League debut, cancelling out Dario Vidosic’s early opener.

Absalonsen has been a shining light for Adelaide through pre-season and he continued his form into the A-League opener, consistently terrorising the Phoenix defence and combining well with striker George Blackwood.

Adelaide did begin to fade as the game went on however, and new coach Marco Kurz will be searching for a more complete 90-minute display on Friday night.

Adelaide have won three of their last five meetings against Brisbane, including a 2-1 win in their most recent clash, and I’m backing them to extend that record. Brisbane didn’t really impress in their loss to City, while Adelaide were looking more dangerous against Wellington - at least until the closing stages. With one game under their belt I’m tipping Adelaide to deliver a more polished performance on Friday and condemn Brisbane to their second straight loss to open the season.
