Match Preview

Tournament favourites Brazil and their quarter-final opponents Belgium endured different fortunes in their Round of 16 games to set up this showdown for a semi-final spot.

Brazil were relatively comfortable as they defeated Mexico 2-0 to continue their journey towards a sixth World Cup success. Belgium, on the other hand, had a dramatic night as they came from two goals down to defeat Japan 3-2 and progress to the last eight.

It sets up a intriguing clash inside the Kazan Arena as Brazil bid to add to three successive 2-0 wins (over Costa Rica, Serbia and Mexico) at the final in Brazil. Neymar and co are being recognised for being hard to beat more than a typical Brazilian team full of flair.

Belgium, who came through Group G as winners with a perfect record of three wins, have plenty of flair of their own. They needed to find it in a dramatic second half against Japan as they stared down a disappointing exit.

Trailing 2-0 after twice conceding in the opening seven minutes of the second half, Belgium levelled things with 16 minutes remaining and then broke Japanese hearts four minutes into injury time when Nacer Chadli struck home the winner.

Roberto Martinez's side will need to be far more switched on against this Brazil side, and I think the South American's will be enjoying another carnival atmosphere.

Brazil's defence has locked rock solid throughout the tournament and even though Belgium have scored more goals than anyone else, I can see them being kept out and eliminated.

Stats

  • Brazil are unbeaten in their last 15 games, Belgium are unbeaten in the last 23 games
  • Brazil haven't conceded a goal since their opening 1-1 draw with Switzerland
