Australia will bid to end a frustrating run of draws when they host United Arab Emirates in a crucial World Cup qualifier at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Tuesday.

The Socceroos have slipped three points behind the top two nations Saudi Arabia and Japan in Group B after four successive draws.

The latest of the quartet of stalemates came on Thursday when Ange Postecoglou's side were held to a 1-1 draw by Iraq when Ahmad Yaseem levelled 14 minutes from time to cancel out Mat Leckie's first-half strike.

Although Australia remain unbeaten after six games, the Socceroos know a victory over the UAE on Tuesday is crucial to their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup via one of the two automatic qualifying berths and not face the play-off which awaits the third place finisher in the group.

One of the two wins which the Socceroos started the campaign with came courtesy of a 1-0 success against UAE, but it has been draws all the way since. Can they snap that run on Tuesday?

Just one point separates Australia and the UAE, who would jump into third spot with victory in Sydney. On the other hand, the Socceroos can move four points clear in the race for at least a play-off spot if they can return to winning ways.

Home advantage should just about see the Socceroos over the line, but expect it to a nervy evening.

Stats

  • Australia have draw the last four qualifiers in a row
  • One point separates the third-placed Socceroos and UAE in fourth
  • Australia won 1-0 when the two sides met earlier in the campaign

Team News

Aaron Mooy sits out the game through suspension so James Troisi and Mustafa Amini are likely to come into the side. Ange Postecoglou must decide whether to stick with Tomi Juric up front or recall Tim Cahill to the starting line-up.
