Australia v Germany Tips and Predictions - Socceroos face tough opener in Confederations Cup

Rippa Staff 18 Jun 2017
  • Australia take on Germany in the Confederations Cup opener
  • Socceroos have a tough opening game
  • World Cup holders should ease to a comfortable win

Australia begin their 2017 Confederations Cup campaign on Monday when they face world champions Germany in their opening game in Russia.

Match Preview

Australia have been a regular competitor at the Confederations Cup in the past and they'll be hoping to use their matches in this competition to test their young charges against some of the better teams from across the world, starting with world champions Germany on Monday.

The Socceroos earned their place in this year's tournament as AFC Asian Cup winners, and prior to a friendly match against Brazil last week had been in a good run of form having gone eight games unbeaten.

A 4-0 defeat to Brazil showed their limitations against the world's best, however, and odds of $8.00 for an Aussie win in this game are a fair reflection of where they stand right now.

After a long and taxing season for many of their stars, Germany have decided to take an under-strength squad into this competition. Joachim Low will be hoping to find out more about his fringe players but these players are still supremely talented and will be desperate to show the boss what they can do, so motivation will be high.

Die Mannschaft were beaten in the semi-finals of the European Championships last year but they will head to Russia as one of the favourites and as holders for next summer's 2018 World Cup. They come into this match on the back of a ten game unbeaten run since last year's disappointment in France and they should win this game at odds of 4/9 with William Hill.

Even with a relatively weakened squad, this Germany side is far stronger than the Socceroos one. The likes of Timo Werner, Lars Stindl and and Julian Brandt will be desperate to impress and after Australia shipped four goals against Brazil last week, we fancy the European side to bag a couple in this one. Germany to win with a one goal handicap is the call.

That man Werner has enjoyed a terrific season with RB Leipzig, bagging 21 goals in just 31 Bundesliga appearances. Having made two appearances so far for the first-team, he'll be hoping to use this competition to force his way in Low's first team plans ahead of next summer's World Cup. The 21-year-old is our anytime scorer tips here.

Stats

  • Germany are unbeaten in ten matches since Euro 2016
  • Australia lost for the first time in nine games last time out
  • These two played out a 2-2 draw in their most recent clash
