  • Adelaide United meet Wellington Phoenix in Round 11 of the A-League on Saturday
  • Phoenix winless against Adelaide since 2015
Adelaide host Wellington on Saturday

Wellington Phoenix will be out to extend their unbeaten streak to six matches when they clash with Adelaide United in A-League Round 11 action on Saturday.

Nestled nicely in the top six following a tremendous last month of form, Wellington could finish Round 11 inside the top four if they beat fifth-placed Adelaide and other results go their way.

It’s been a phenomenal season for Phoenix so far, with Mark Rudan doing a fantastic job in his first season as an A-League coach, transforming the Kiwi club into genuine premiership contenders.

Phoenix are unbeaten against the top three sides this season, famously conquering Sydney FC 3-1 away from home, while they’ve also secured entertaining 1-1 draws with Melbourne Victory and Perth Glory.

Wellington have been impressive over the festive period, crushing Brisbane 4-1 before a stunning strike from David Williams earned them a much-deserved point against Victory in their last outing.

Meanwhile, Adelaide were extremely fortunate to come away with a 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets in their last game, with a deflected strike from Mileusnic and a Craig Goodwin penalty in the 91st minute handing them the win - despite the Jets having over 20 shots and largely dominating the contest.

The victory propelled Adelaide back up to fifth on the ladder - on the same points and goal difference as Wellington - and four points ahead of the seventh-placed Jets.

Adelaide have enjoyed a dominant record over Wellington in recent seasons, winning their last three encounters and unbeaten against them since 2015. However, this is the best Phoenix have played in years, and they certainly won’t be thinking of their past performances come Saturday. Adelaide were lucky against the Jets and I think Wellington are playing well enough to take all three points in this one.

Stats

  • Adelaide have won their last three meetings
  • Wellington haven’t beaten Adelaide since 2015
  • Adelaide’s last two wins over Phoenix have been 3-1 scorelines
