Adelaide host Sydney on Sunday

Competition leaders Sydney FC target their fifth straight win over Adelaide United when the two sides square off to conclude A-League Round 16 action on Sunday night at Coopers Stadium.

Sydney and Adelaide are generating quite the rivalry this season - although can it really be considered a rivalry with one team dominating it?

The Sky Blues have won both encounters this season by a single goal, most famously in the FFA Cup final as they prevailed in extra-time in a contest that featured the controversial incident with Michael Marrone and the Sydney ball-boy.

Adelaide have been up-and-down all season, but Sydney - if possible - are looking even stronger than last season, opening up an eight-point lead at the top of the table following their last-start 3-0 victory over Brisbane Roar.

It’s seemingly Sydney’s premiership to lose again this season, with their only potential stumbling block coming shortly as they prepare to juggle Asian Champions League commitments with the domestic season.

Still, the fact remains that in their last 43 A-League regular season games, Sydney have only lost twice - and it doesn’t appear likely that a third will occur on Sunday night.

Adelaide have improved from their dismal season in 2016/17, but they still don’t look convincing or capable of really challenging the best sides in the competition when it really matters.

The Reds have won, lost and drawn in their last three matches, beating embattled Perth, losing to the struggling Roar and sharing the spoils with the improving Wanderers.

Adelaide are tough to break down, but they just don’t have the firepower to overcome an explosive Sydney outfit. Expect the reigning premiers to come away with all three points once more.

Stats

  • Sydney have won the last four encounters between the sides
  • Adelaide’s last win over Sydney at home came in 2015
  • Adelaide have only scored one goal against Sydney in their last five meetings
