Adelaide host Victory on Wednesday

Reigning premiers Melbourne Victory renew their rivalry with Adelaide United during mid-week A-League Round 12 action on Wednesday at Coopers Stadium.

Victory go in search of their fourth straight win over Adelaide when the two traditional A-League juggernauts square off for supremacy on Wednesday night in the city of churches.

After consecutive 1-1 draws with Wellington and City, Victory returned to the winners circle on Saturday night against the Wanderers, with a brace by star striker Ola Toivonen propelling them to a 2-1 triumph.

The win sent Victory back up to second spot on the ladder - and they were temporarily first before Perth Glory recovered from 2-0 down to beat Brisbane 4-2.

It was an important win for Victory to keep pace with Glory and Sydney FC, but it would also give them confidence that they can prevail without Japanese import Keisuke Honda, who is set to miss the next month of football through injury.

Adelaide meanwhile have lost a bit of steam and momentum since capturing their first FFA Cup trophy with a win over Sydney FC earlier in the season.

Indeed, the Reds have won just one of their last five games coming into this showdown - and that was a fortuitous triumph against Newcastle, a game in which the Jets dominated with over 20 shots but somehow couldn’t put away, with Adelaide stealing the three points with a late penalty.

Adelaide just aren’t playing like a well-oiled machine at the moment, but they did dig out a 0-0 draw with the in-form Phoenix in Round 11, so they do bring decent form into this encounter.

However, Victory have had their number in recent games and right now, they are simply a better team. Victory have lost a bit of steam as well following their six-game winning streak earlier in the campaign, but they returned to winning ways last week and I think they can make it four wins on the bounce over the Reds on Wednesday.

Stats

  • Victory have won the last three games between the sides
  • Victory have won by a combined 7-1 scoreline in those games
  • This will be their first game in Adelaide since October 2017
