Sydney face Victory on Saturday

The 2017/18 A-League Grand Finalists will be decided this weekend as defending champions Sydney FC face Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets take on Melbourne City.

Both Melbourne teams earned a passage through to this weekend’s semi-finals after winning their respective elimination finals, with Victory coming from behind to conquer Adelaide United 2-1 - thanks to some sublime Besart Berisha acrobatics - while City came away with a comfortable 2-0 triumph over Brisbane.

Victory set up a blockbuster semi-final ‘Big Blue’ showdown with minor premiers Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Saturday April 28. Sydney beat Victory 1-0 just a couple of weeks ago at Allianz in the final round of the regular season, while the Sky Blues also emerged triumphant in their two other previous meetings this season.

It will also be a rematch of last season’s Grand Final, which Sydney won 4-2 on penalties after the teams couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes. All up, Sydney have won the last seven meetings between the sides, with Victory’s last triumph coming on January 26 in 2016, while their last win over the Sky Blues at Allianz was in 2015.

The second semi-final pits the Newcastle Jets up against Melbourne City on Friday April 27 at McDonald Jones Stadium. The Jets were the surprise side of the season, recovering from picking up the wooden spoon the previous season to surge into second spot on the ladder.

Ernie Merrick completely transformed the team this season, instilling an attacking brand of football at the club, although they did stutter somewhat to the finish line after already securing second spot in the regular season, losing three of their last four matches. Newcastle did however bounce back extremely strongly in the last game of the season, demolishing the Central Coast Mariners 8-2 in a thunderous performance that will surely bring some confidence back to the club.

City meanwhile will be confident of reaching a first A-League Grand Final after beating the Jets 3-0 at McDonald Jones Stadium a few weeks ago. City slumped to a 2-1 loss to Wellington in their final game of the regular season, but they too bounced back to topple Brisbane with relative ease to reach the semi-finals, and with Daniel Arzani and Bruno Fornaroli firing, they are a genuine threat not just to the Jets, but to take home a maiden premiership.
