Victory face Adelaide on Saturday

Melbourne Victory go in search of their fifth consecutive win when they face FFA Cup champions Adelaide United in the pick of the A-League Round 7 matches this weekend.

Victory and Adelaide renew their storied rivalry on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium as the defending premiers and FFA Cup champions collide. Victory are the form team in the competition despite running second to Perth Glory, registering four wins on the trot and producing the performance of the season so far in last week’s superb 4-0 demolition of the Wanderers, while Adelaide also emerged victorious in Round 6, prevailing 2-1 over Brisbane in a fiery contest at Coopers.

Round 7 kicks off at Spotless Stadium as the Western Sydney Wanderers play host to Central Coast Mariners on Friday night. The Wanderers still have just one win for the season, but that’s one more than the hapless Mariners, who are once again anchored to the bottom of the ladder following a 2-1 defeat to Sydney FC last weekend.

Sydney FC look to make it consecutive wins against teams outside of the top six when they square off against Wellington Phoenix in the first game on Saturday at Jubilee Oval. Phoenix almost pulled off a shock win over competition leaders Perth on Sunday, but they ultimately conceded a late equaliser to finish with a 1-1 draw.

Perth Glory maintained their unbeaten start to the season with that late draw and remain top of the table heading into their Round 7 showdown with Melbourne City. Warren Joyce and his team were under immense pressure in Round 6 as he once again dropped star striker Bruno Fornaroli, but City ended up playing their best game of the season to beat the Newcastle Jets 3-0 at home.

Newcastle will attempt to bounce back from that defeat when they entertain Brisbane Roar to conclude Round 7 action at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday. Both teams are outside the top six with just one win and coming off last-start defeats.
