Jets host Sydney on Saturday

Still searching for their first win of the season, Newcastle Jets face another tough test when they play host to competition leaders Sydney FC on Saturday night in the pick of the A-League Round 4 matches.

After going from wooden spooners to grand finalists last season, the Jets once again find themselves anchored to the bottom of the ladder after three games of the 2018/19 campaign, with Ernie Merrick’s side falling 1-0 to Melbourne Victory in the grand final rematch on Saturday night. Sydney meanwhile bounced back strongly from their mid-week FFA Cup final loss to Adelaide, easing past Melbourne City 3-0 to surge to the top of the ladder.

Round 4 action kicks off at AAMI Park when Melbourne City square off against Wellington Phoenix on Friday night. Both teams will be aiming for an immediate response in regards to their respective Round 3 defeats, with City falling 3-0 to Sydney and Wellington suffering a poor 3-0 loss of their own at home to the Wanderers.

Speaking of the Wanderers, Markus Babbel’s team will be confident following their first win of the season as they entertain Brisbane Roar in the first game on Saturday. One of just three winless sides this campaign, Brisbane are coming off a 2-1 away loss to Perth as they target a first three points of the season.

Arguably the form team in the competition at the moment, FFA Cup champions Adelaide United look to continue their superb form when they take on the high-flying Perth Glory in the first game on Sunday. The Reds are on a roll after winning the FFA Cup and beating Central Coast 3-0 in Round 3, while Glory have taken seven points from a possible nine to hold a share of the competition lead with Sydney.

Round 4 concludes at AAMI Park as Melbourne Victory attempt to back up last week’s win over Newcastle when they face off against the Central Coast Mariners. The Mariners put together a promising start to the season, but they fell back into old habits during a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Adelaide in Round 3 and face a difficult challenge to claim their first win of the season away to Victory.
