Sydney and Newcastle meet on Saturday

A blockbuster Melbourne derby and a top-of-the-table showdown highlights A-League Split-Round 22 action as Victory and City collide on Friday March 2 at AAMI Park and Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets duel on Saturday March 3 at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Victory will be looking to build on their encouraging 3-0 dispatch of Adelaide United last week as they target a swift climb up the ladder, while City will be determined to bounce back and maintain pace with the second-placed Newcastle Jets after slumping to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to the struggling Perth Glory.

Runaway leaders Sydney attempt to increase their lead at the top of the ladder to a staggering 14 points when they travel to the Hunter to face Newcastle. Sydney arrive full of confidence following their comprehensive 3-1 derby win over the Wanderers on Sunday, while the Jets are also flying high after securing finals football for the first time in seven years after their 1-0 away win over Brisbane.

Speaking of Brisbane, the Roar will be aiming to bounce back as they try to keep their finals chances alive when they host Adelaide United in the second game on Saturday night. Currently four points adrift of the Wanderers, it’s shaping as a must-win game for Brisbane, while Adelaide will be hoping to respond after a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Victory.

Western Sydney will be back again on Saturday March 10 as they take on the Wellington Phoenix at Spotless Stadium, while the only other game in the second week of the split-round sees Perth Glory and Central Coast Mariners do battle at nib Stadium on the same night. Both sides need a win to keep their faint finals chances alive.
