Victory and Jets clash on Saturday night

Only three games take place this weekend during split A-League Round 21 action, with a Grand Final rematch between Melbourne Victory and Newcastle Jets the pick of the matches.

After Victory pulled off a controversial 1-0 win in last season’s Grand Final over the Jets, the two sides clash for the third time in 2018/19 on Saturday night at Simonds Stadium in Geelong.

Victory have gone on to pile more misery on Newcastle this season, winning both of their previous meetings by 1-0 and 2-1 scorelines respectively.

Victory managed to secure a 1-1 draw with City in the Melbourne derby last week despite going down to 10 men in the first half, while Newcastle missed a chance to narrow the gap on the top six after being held to a 0-0 stalemate at home to Adelaide, leaving them six points off the pace.

Round 21 kicks off at Leichhardt Oval on Friday night when Sydney FC play host to Adelaide United.

Sydney leapfrogged Victory into second place on the ladder after their 1-0 win over Wellington last week, while Adelaide are hanging on to fourth spot following their goalless draw at Newcastle.

In the last game of the weekend, Melbourne City attempt to snap a five-game winless run when they square off against competition leaders Perth Glory.

City are still in fifth spot despite their poor form, but they risk being dragged into a scrap for a finals ticket if they continue to misfire - and it doesn’t get any easier this weekend as they host Glory at AAMI Park on Sunday night, with Perth looking to bounce back after they conceded a 95 minute equaliser to draw 1-1 with the Wanderers on Sunday night.

Next week, two more matches complete the split round, with Wellington Phoenix taking on Central Coast Mariners and Brisbane Roar facing Western Sydney Wanderers.
