Wanderers host Jets on Friday

Western Sydney Wanderers look to continue their charge up the A-League ladder when they face the high-flying Newcastle Jets in the second week of split-round 20 action.

The Wanderers play host to Newcastle in the first of three games this weekend on Friday night at Spotless Stadium, and it promises to be a cracking contest.

Playing for the second straight week due to their postponed clash with Wellington taking place on Sunday night, the Wanderers are confident following their 4-0 demolition of the Kiwi club - and if they can pick up three more points at home on Friday night, they will overtake Melbourne Victory into fifth spot.

Newcastle also have a great chance to pull further away from their rivals after Melbourne City suffered a brutal 4-0 defeat to Sydney FC on the weekend. The Jets - who beat the Wanderers by that scoreline in their last meeting just before Christmas - can move seven points clear of third-placed City if they can emerge triumphant.

Wellington meanwhile will be hoping to bounce back strongly when they play host to Perth Glory in the first game on Saturday at Westpac Stadium.

Phoenix were extremely poor against the Wanderers, and it appears as if the embattled Kiwi side will once again be missing out on finals football this season. For Perth, this is a must-win contest if they themselves want to count themselves among finals contenders this campaign.

Round 20 action concludes on Saturday night at Coopers Stadium as Adelaide United take on Central Coast Mariners.

Compared to the bulk of their rival clubs, Adelaide have been a very solid outfit this season, and despite never really illustrating premiership-winning form, they have the chance to come to within just two points of third-placed City if they can defeat the Mariners.

Currently nine points adrift of a finals spot, it’s essential that Central Coast pick up some kind of result if they want to remain within striking distance.
