A-League Round 2

Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City collide in another blockbuster derby in the pick of the A-League Round 2 matches coming up this weekend.

Bitter cross-town rivals Victory and City square off for the first time this season as both clubs target bragging rights in the Melbourne derby at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

Victory will be determined to avoid consecutive losses to open the season following their 1-0 defeat to Sydney, while City will be looking to build on their promising 2-0 dispatch of Brisbane.

Western Sydney Wanderers will also be aiming to make it two wins from two when they play host to the Central Coast Mariners in the other game on Saturday. The Wanderers put the disappointment of losing coach Tony Popovic behind them by edging Perth 2-1 on Sunday, while the Mariners are already chasing valuable points after suffering a crushing 5-1 loss in the F3 derby to Newcastle.

Round 2 action kicks off at Suncorp Stadium as Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United battle it out for their first win of the season. Brisbane were toppled 2-0 by City last week while Adelaide were held 1-1 across the ditch against Wellington.

Newcastle Jets will be targeting a repeat of their Round 1 performance when they take on Perth Glory at McDonald Jones Stadium in the first game on Sunday. Newcastle were superb in firing five goals past the Mariners, while Perth couldn’t hang with the Wanderers at Spotless.

Reigning premiers Sydney FC then face Wellington Phoenix to conclude Round 2 at Allianz Stadium. Sydney are going for a maximum six points after two rounds after squeezing past Victory last week, while Wellington are going for their first win of the new campaign following a 1-1 draw with Adelaide.
