Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City collide in a highly-anticipated derby clash in the highlight of this weekend’s A-League Round 18 fixtures.
Victory and City will clash for the third time this season on Saturday night, with both teams chasing a valuable three points. City famously demolished Victory 4-0 back in Round 2 and once more on their way to the FFA Cup trophy, however Kevin Muscat’s men enjoyed a degree of revenge with a 2-1 win in December. With both sides coming off 2-1 defeats to Sydney (Victory) and Newcastle (City), it’s looming as a crucial encounter.
Speaking of Sydney FC, the Sky Blues will look to extend their unbeaten A-League run to 18 matches when they take on Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night. Sydney created an 11-point gap at the top of the table following their win over Victory on the weekend, while Brisbane climbed to third spot after a last-gasp 2-1 triumph over the Wanderers.
Wellington Phoenix and Western Sydney Wanderers square off in the first game on Saturday at Yarrow Stadium. Both sides are languishing outside the top six after failing to pick up three points last week, with another draw or loss to either side set to be a big blow to their finals aspirations.
Finals aspirations are high in the late game on Saturday night as Perth Glory play host to Newcastle Jets. Glory saw their momentum snapped last week after yet another defeat in Gosford against the Mariners, while the Jets moved to within one point of the team from Western Australia after an excellent win over City in Coffs Harbour last week.
Round 18 action concludes on Sunday when the Central Coast Mariners do battle with Adelaide United in a bottom-of-the-table clash. The Mariners will be confident after their superb win over Perth last week, while Adelaide can lift themselves off the bottom of the ladder if they emerge triumphant.
