Wales v Australia International Test Preview and Predictions - Wallabies to maintain unbeaten run

Gary Emmerson 9 Nov 2017
  • Wales have lost the last 12 meetings against Australia
  • The Wallabies last lost to Wales in 2008

Australia's Wallabies are on a six-game unbeaten run and will bid to extend when they face Wales in the first test of a European tour on Saturday.

Michael Cheika's side ended the Rugby Championship with two draws with South Africa and two wins over Argentina to finish second behind unbeaten rivals New Zealand.

Australia followed that encouraging end to the tournament by defeating the All Blacks 23-18 in what was a dead-rubber in the third Bledisloe Cup games, and they defeated Japan 63-30 last weekend en route to Europe.

The rare victory over New Zealand and demolition of Japan means the Wallabies travel to Europe in buoyant mood and with coach Cheika beginning to bring the best out of his side.

In the first of a three-game tour that also features games against England and Scotland, the Wallabies face Wales at Pricipality Stadium in Cardiff.

Wales bounced back from a disppointing Six Nations campaign with wins over Samoa and Tonga on a mini-tour in June while coach Warren Gatland was orchestrating a drawn series with New Zealand at the helm of the British & Irish Lions.

But the hosts have an disappointing record against Australia, losing the last 12 meetings dating back to 2008 when Wales recorded a 21-18 victory. That run should become unlucky 13 on Saturday.

Team News

Wales have named Owen Williams at centre for his first start, Josh Navidi at flanker, and recalled Leigh Halfpenny at fullback and Aaron Shingler in the pack. They are without Justin Tipuric, Sam Warburton, Rhys Webb and Samson Lee through injury.

Australia have brought in Will Genia and Bernard Foley after both sat out the win over Japan, while the centres will be huge after Cheika named Samu Kerevi and Tevita Kuridrani together.
