Australia v South Africa Match Preview and Predictions - Wallabies to claim crucial win

Gary Emmerson 7 Sep 2018
  • Australia and South Africa drew both games last year
  • The Wallabies have lost their opening two fixtures in the 2018 Rugby Championship
  • The Springboks are 1-1 after a win and a loss to Argentina

Australia head into Round 3 of the Rugby Championship knowing nothing short of victory is required when they take on South Africa at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

Back-to-back defeats to rivals New Zealand in the opening two games leave the Wallabies sat at the foot of the standings, while the Springboks shared a win apiece with Argentina from their two clashes.

Match Preview

Australia were no match for Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in the opening two games of the 2018 Rugby Championship and are now seemingly embroiled in a three-way battle for second spot.

Michael Cheika's Wallabies went down 38-13 at home in Sydney before losing in similar fashion as they went down 42-12 across the ditch.

South Africa started with a 34-21 victory over Argentina in Durban in their tournament opener, but suffered a 32-19 loss in South America to leave things wide-open behind the dominant All Blacks.

The Springboks will be out to bounce back from that upset when they travel to Brisbane, although they will have to halt Australia's five-match winning run at Suncorp Stadium to do so.

The two sides played out an entertaining 23-23 draw Down Under last year and repeated it in South Africa when they finished level at 27-27 in Bloemfontein.

Another close contest looks in store again, but the Suncorp Stadium advantage could see the Wallabies get home narrowly and record their first win of the campaign.
