Argentina v Australia Rugby Championship Preview and Predictions - Wallabies chase second spot

Gary Emmerson 6 Oct 2017
  • Argentina are pointless and facing their worst ever Rugby Championship campaign
  • A win for Australia could earn them second spot in the standings
  • The Wallabies won by 25 points when the sides met in Australia

Australia can secure second spot in the standings behind New Zealand with victory over Argentina in Mendoza on Sunday morning.

The Wallabies almost overcame South Africa last weekend, but they can exact revenge by leapfrogging the Springboks for second spot - providing New Zealand complete a perfect campaign earlier in the day.

Match Preview

Australia were unlucky losers last weekend when narrowly going down to South Africa, but victory over wooden spoonists Argentina could see Michael Chieka's side finish second in the standings.

Much depends on whether New Zealand defeat South Africa earlier, of course, but the Wallabies can complete a campaign of contrasting performances with a win in Mendoza on Sunday morning.

Argentina have produced solid performances throughout the 2017 Rugby Championship, but the Pumas have still been left without a win and are assured of another campaign at the bottom of the pile.

Without even a bonus point, defeat against Australia could represent the worst ever Rugby Championship for the Pumas.

Australia won by 25 points when the two sides met in Canberra, but there is no doubt the Wallabies took another step up in terms of performance last week when going so close to a famous win in South Africa.

I fully expect the Wallabies to defeat Argentina and, while it won't get ugly, this should be another clear cut victory for Chieka's side.

Team News

Argentina make four changes to the side beaten by New Zealand with Martin Landajo, Marcos Kremer, Matias Alemanno and Javier Ortega Desio all named to start.

There is no surprise Australia have named an unchanged side after last week's impressive performance in South Africa.
