Wests Tigers aim to snap a five-match losing run to the Penrith Panthers when the two sides clash in NRL Round 9 action at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

The Tigers will be out for revenge over Penrith as the two sides face off in the second game in Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium on Friday.

On a five-match losing streak against the Panthers, including a 9-8 defeat back in Round 4, the Tigers will also be desperate to bounce back from a 20-point hiding to competition leaders the Roosters last week.

It hasn’t been a bad season for the Tigers so far, with Michael Maguire’s side posting an even 4-4 record after two months of football, but fans will be well aware of their collapse towards the end of last season, so putting wins on the board now is a must.

Regardless, the Tigers should be challenging for a spot in the top eight this season, and that’s just about where they are as a club. Can they claim a vital two points on Friday night?

Penrith are in a much worse predicament and haven’t won since their triumph over the Tigers over a month ago, losing their last four matches as they languish near the bottom of the ladder in 15th.

With just two wins from eight games after starting the season as one of the favourites for the premiership, the pressure is mounting on Ivan Cleary as he tries to turn his club’s fortunes around. It was another hiding for the Panthers last week as they slipped to a 30-12 loss to the Raiders in Wagga Wagga.

The Panthers do have a great record against the Tigers though, and they will be hoping to make it six wins on the trot come Friday night. I think Penrith can scrape out a win here - the Tigers are very erratic and have suffered some heavy defeats in recent weeks. It’s a toss-up, but I’m leaning on the side of Penrith.

Stats
