A top three blockbuster awaits in Magic Round on Sunday as the Sydney Roosters and Canberra Raiders collide at Suncorp Stadium.

Strap yourselves in because this clash between competition leaders the Roosters and third-placed Canberra promise to be the match of Magic Round when the two teams do battle on Sunday.

Early signs suggest the Roosters are the most equipped team we’ve seen in the last 25 years or so to secure back-to-back premierships, with the minor premiers winning their last eight games after dropping their opening match of the season to Souths.

Trent Robinson’s side were at the top of their game last week as they demolished the Titans by a 42-12 scoreline, with the electric Latrell Mitchell scoring 26 of them single-handedly with three tries and seven goals.

Mitchell is arguably the form player in the competition and the Raiders will have to contain him if they are going to pull off the upset.

It’s been a fantastic start to the season for the Raiders, who are the best team in the competition defensively, which is a far cry from their previous two seasons where that area has cost them a spot in the finals.

Canberra cruised past Penrith 30-12 in Wagga Wagga last week and have now won six of their eight matches this season to sit in third spot on the ladder.

Ricky Stuart has suffered a blow for this encounter though, with John Bateman ruled out for up to eight weeks with a fractured eye socket. Hudson Young comes into the starting side, while Jordan Rapana returns on the wing.

Canberra have a great recent record against the Roosters, winning their last three meetings, and they are a solid chance to make it four on Sunday. Their defence has improved considerably, which will help contain Mitchell, while they are still as dangerous as ever with the ball in hand. It’s tough to go past the Roosters right now, but Canberra will push them all the way - and might even come away with the spoils here.
