State of Origin Series Preview and Predictions - Who will win the 2018 Origin series?

  • New South Wales start as favourites
  • Queensland have won 11 of the last 12 series

New South Wales and Queensland lock horns once again for the annual State of Origin series, but who will emerge triumphant and lift the Origin shield in 2018?

We take a look at how the series will unfold and make our predictions as Queensland's Maroons bid to continue their dominance and New South Wales Blues bid to end a run of just one success since 2006.

State of Origin 2018 Series Preview

The 2018 State of Origin series will be a new era for both sides with much-changed line-ups set to feature and a changing of the guard. Will that signal an end to more than a decade of Queensland dominance?

New South Wales will start the series as favourites to be crowned Origin champions for only the second time since 2006. The Blues have won just one of the last 12 Origins, that coming in 2014.

They did start as favourites last year and looked destined to break the Maroon dominance when winning in Brisbane in the opener, only to lose the following two games as Queensland coach Kevin Walters made a winning start to life in the hot-seat.

It is New South Wales who have a new face at the helm this year with Brad Fittler taking over from Laurie Daley and he will be hoping to oversee a rare series win for the Blues.

Queensland begin life without Origin stalwarts Johnathan Thurston, Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith and Walters has opted to go without Darius Boyd and Matt Scott for the opening game...so will this Maroons team have the Origin aura still?

New South Wales are like a brand new side with Fittler having named a record 11 debutants in his Blues side. Just six players survive from last year with James Tedesco, James Maloney, Dave Klemmer, captain Boyd Cordner, Tyson Frizell and Jake Trbojevic named for Game 1.

Will the fresh faces work the oracle and help the Blues to overpower the dominance of the Maroons?

State of Origin Series Prediction

The winning habit is hard to remove once a team has got it and at the odds, Queensland represent far better value than New South Wales. For a team which has won only one of the last 12 series, they look unders to me.

Last year, Queensland should the kind of resilience that has got them over line so often before and I'm happy to have history on my side this series too. Take them to win, and to do so with a 2-1 scoreline...a result that has been the case in 14 of the last 15 years.
