State of Origin 2017 Predictions - Queensland set for another Origin triumph over New South Wales

The opening game of the 2017 State of Origin series gets underway at the end of this month and we’ve made our three tips and predictions for what will transpire throughout the upcoming series.

Queensland to win the 2017 State of Origin series

How can you confidently tip against the Maroons? With two games being played in Brisbane this year, Queensland hold all the cards and will start as favourites to win what would be an 11th series in the last 12 years.

Currently in the middle of an unprecedented stretch of Origin dominance, what can New South Wales do any differently this year to stop them? Yes, the loss of Greg Inglis, Matt Scott and Corey Parker are big blows, but Queensland have the depth to cover them, while again, New South Wales look ready to chop and change as they search for the correct formula to take down the Maroons.

With Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk all still playing close to the best football of their careers, Queensland are as intimidating as they’ve ever been. Billy Slater is also back after spending the better part of the last two years on the sidelines. Four modern-day legends up against a NSW side that - let’s be honest - don’t really have any big game-breakers (save for possibly Jarryd Hayne if he’s picked).

And, as I mentioned before, two games in Brisbane is a massive advantage for Queensland. NSW have only won twice at Suncorp Stadium since 2009, with their 2014 series win including two games in Sydney. All signs point to another Maroons triumph in 2017.

Darius Boyd to be leading Origin try scorer in 2017

With Billy Slater likely to return to the Origin arena in 2017 after missing the last two series through shoulder injuries, Darius Boyd will be forced back onto the wing, with Corey Oates possibly the unlucky man to miss out on selection.

If Boyd plays on the wing, he will be set to continue his incredible try-scoring feats at Origin level. No doubt playing on the end of arguably the greatest backline of all time has helped his cause, but Boyd is a top class finisher - as his 16 Origin tries suggests. Only Greg Inglis - who is injured for this series - has scored more Origin tries than Boyd, so expect more crisp backline movements to be finished off by the Broncos star again in 2017.

Coen Hess to emerge as a future 10-year Origin player

North Queensland Cowboys forward Coen Hess surely has to be picked in the Maroons side this year, especially with warhorses Corey Parker and Matt Scott unavailable through injury and veterans Nate Myles and Aiden Guerra not in the kind of form we’re used to seeing.

The 20-year-old Bundaberg native has been on fire for the Cowboys since making his debut as a teenager two years ago, and I wouldn’t hesitate placing him as one of the leading second-rowers in the competition right now.

Hess is arguably the strongest forward in the game at present, and the scary thing is he’s only going to get better and physically more imposing. Furthermore, Hess has a knack for getting over the line - he’s scored 11 tries in just 18 games for the Cowboys, remarkable numbers for a forward.

Hess can potentially terrorise the likely NSW halves of Luke Keary and Mitchell Pearce on the edges, while he will be near impossible to stop close to the line.

Watch out for Hess to have a big debut series and cement himself as a future 10-year Origin player.
