Rabbitohs face Roosters on Friday

Traditional rivals South Sydney Rabbitohs and Sydney Roosters square off in a mouth-watering top-of-the-table showdown on Friday night at ANZ Stadium.

South Sydney take on a competition heavyweight for the second straight week as they prepare for the challenge of bitter rivals the Roosters on Friday night.

The Rabbitohs regained top spot on the ladder last week with their impressive 30-20 victory over Melbourne - can they repeat that effort for the second week on the bounce?

With 11 wins from their last 12 matches, it’s tough to bet against them - but if any team is going to knock the high-flying Rabbitohs off, it’s Trent Robinson’s Roosters outfit.

While Souths are top and have been lighting up the NRL, the Roosters have been gradually building throughout the course of the season - and you get the feeling they are timing their run to perfection.

It took a while for high-profile recruits Cooper Cronk and James Tedesco to settle into their system, but for the last three months or so, the Roosters have arguably been the best team in the competition.

Indeed, the Roosters have won their last four games and 10 of their last 12, while they are also the best defensive team in the competition.

Defence wins premierships and big games as the old saying goes - and I think that’s what’s going to separate these two sides on Friday night. Souths have conceded 20 or more points in five of their last six matches, and that likely won’t get it done against the Tricolours - I’m backing the Roosters home in a low-scoring affair.

Stats

  • Roosters have won three of their last four meetings
  • Souths won 26-14 in Round 6 this season
  • None of their last four encounters have topped 40 points
