South Sydney Rabbitohs target their third straight win over North Queensland Cowboys as the two sides close out Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

Souths will be out to maintain their status in the top two and maybe even jump into the competition lead when they face the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon.

The Rabbitohs will know before they run out onto Suncorp Stadium if they can finish Round 9 at the top of the ladder, with Canberra needing to beat the Roosters earlier in the day for it to happen.

After a few wins based on defence, Souths cut loose on the Broncos last week in a grudge match between coaches Wayne Bennett and Anthony Seibold, with the Rabbitohs cruising to a 36-6 victory.

Cody Walker was once again the star of the show as the five-eighth continues to mount a claim for Origin, and if he can fire again on Sunday, the Cowboys will be in trouble.

Bennett has selected the same side that dismantled the Broncos for this clash as the Bunnies aim for the Queensland double.

North Queensland meanwhile kept pace with the top eight last week after registering a 28-14 victory over fellow battlers the Titans.

It hasn’t been a great start to the season for the Cowboys, who are unfortunately following last year’s failed blueprint so far, but there’s a lot of time to turn things around, and a statement win in their home state against one of the competition’s heavyweights would be a nice way for them re-establish themselves as a team to watch.

The Rabbitohs won both of their encounters last season by one point, but the Cowboys will do well to keep the game that close on Sunday. Souths were firing on all cylinders last week, and while a letdown wouldn’t be surprising, I think they will have too much firepower across the paddock for a Cowboys side who are still trying to click with their combinations.

Stats
