New South Wales State of Origin Game 1 Team - Blues name record 11 debutants

  • 11 set for debut for the Blues
  • Regular Origin stars left out

New South Wales coach Brad Fittler has named a record 11 debutant in his Blues side to face Queensland in State of Origin Game 1 at the MCG on June 6.

Fittler, who takes over from Laurie Daley coach this year, has kept just six players from the side which lost another Origin series last year with James Tedesco, James Maloney, Dave Klemmer, Boyd Cordner, Tyson Frizell and Jake Trbojevic named for Game 1.

But the 11 new faces represents a record in a single Origin side, beating the 10 named by Queensland in 2001 and the previews NSW record of eight debutants in 2002.

The 11 debutants are Jack De Belin, Tom Trbojevic, Josh Addo-Carr, James Roberts, Latrell Mitchell, Nathan Cleary, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Damien Cook, Tyrone Peachey, Paul Vaughan and Angus Crichton.

"I felt we needed combinations and balance," Fittler said. "I sat down with [selectors] Greg Alexander and Danny Buderus to pick our best 17. We put reputations to one side. "The team comes first, we have picked an exciting group of footballers who play exciting footy."

Boyd Cordner will lead the Blues into battle when the 2018 Origin series gets underway on neutral ground in Melbourne next Wednesday, but among those overlooked for selection were Aaron Woods, Josh Dugan, Blake Ferguson, Wade Graham and Josh Jackson.

Queensland's Maroons continued their dominance last year when coming from 1-0 down to retain the Origin shield with a 2-1 victory.

That means that the New South Wales Blues have won just one series since 2006, that coming in 2014. They have also lost the last three series, all by the same 2-1 scoreline.

New South Wales team: 1. James Tedesco, 2. Josh Addo-Carr, 3. Latrell Mitchell, 4. James Roberts, 5. Tom Trbojevic, 6. James Maloney, 7. Nathan Cleary, 8. David Klemmer, 9. Damien Cook, 10. Reagan Campbell-Gillard, 11. Boyd Cordner, 12. Tyson Frizell, 13. Jack de Belin. Interchange: 14. Paul Vaughan, 15. Jake Trbojevic, 16. Angus Crichton, 17. Tyrone Peachey. Reserves: 18. Tariq Sims, 19. Nick Cotric
