Johnny Ward was living in Australia back in 2009 working an unfulfilling office job. Now he’s a millionaire who travels the world for a living. Not a bad gig if you can get it!

Ward - who grew up in Northern Ireland - was going through the motions at a sales-based job that organised corporate conferences. It was quite a lucrative job due to the fact employees were able to earn up to $20,000 per month in commission. However it wasn’t the life Ward wanted.

So he informed his employers that he would be leaving them. They in turn offered him a new position and doubled his salary. Ward accepted the fresh role for a while, but it was all to similar to his old job - mainly being a standard 9-5 office job. He quit after four months.

“I felt like it wasn’t fulfilling in any way, and I wasn’t free, having to ask for permission for take time off — and I don’t do well with authority,” Ward told Business Insider. “I always dreamed of being free. Initially that feeling came from backpacking broke, but I wasn’t truly free because I wasn’t financially free. Truly free is to have the financial security to allow you to do whatever you want to do.”

With time on his hands and money in his bank account, Ward jetted off on a one-way trip to Africa in 2010.

“The World Cup was on, and I had all this money burning a hole in my pocket,” Ward says. “I’d never seen money like that in my bank account before, so I booked a one-way ticket to Zimbabwe.”

During his globe-trotting adventures, Ward decided to dive head-first into the world of online blogging. He established OneStep4Ward - a website where he would share his experiences in travelling.

It was then that Ward discovered his true passion.

“I remember the first bucks I ever made,” he says. “It was like $80. The first guy ever to pay me for an advertisement on my site changed my mindset entirely, and I thought, ‘This might work!'

It certainly has. Ward quickly transformed his blog into an entire online media company called “Step4WardMedia”. With the assistance of four other people and in the three years since he created the company, Step4Ward Media has earned over $1 million and averages over $1000 per day.

One of the first things Ward did with the money was purchase a two-bedroom apartment in Thailand in cash. He spends around three months of the year working and relaxing there and travels for the remainder of the year, while constantly updating his blog at the same time.

He has now set himself another challenge - to visit every country on earth. So far he has travelled to 153 of the 196 nations.

“It doesn’t seem that real,” Johnny says. “I don’t live a flash lifestyle, so it feels arbitrary. I’m really careful with my money. I have a wealth manager in the UK, and I’m investing heavily. I bought a place in London and the one in Bangkok, and I’m looking to buy another in London.”

Quite the life you’re living there mate. Any advice on how us mere mortals can experience a similar life?

“I worry in the social media age, people get so caught up in creating inspirational memes and oversharing, when you just gotta do it. I love to read that stuff, but you need to draw a line in the sand and say, ‘Now I’m going to do it.’ You can get caught up in the online hyperbole. I tell people you don’t need to make $1 million. Initially you can make $1 or $10 or $50, and have that money in your Paypal and then be like, ‘Wow, this is actually possible. No matter how you plan to make money online, always start a blog, even if you’re not going to monetize. Have a voice, be an authority. I think having a blog is so integral to that movement.”

There you have it. It’s all about dem #lifegoals. Check out more of Ward’s Instagram uploads below to help give you motivation to follow your own dreams.
