Sydney Thunder v Melbourne Renegades Big Bash League Predictions and Match Preview - Finals place on the line

Rippa Staff 22 Jan 2018
  • Both sides are battling for a place in the finals
  • The Renegades have dominate the Thunder in past meetings

It now looks to be a three-way fight for the fourth place in BBL07, as Melbourne Renegades, Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat await anxiously for what could be a keen battle.

That makes the fight between the Renegades and the Thunder a direct contest for the finals place when they meet in Canberra on Wednesday, January 24.

Match Preview

The Thunder have four wins from their nine matches so far and will complete their league engagements with this encounter. It is their inferior net run rate (NRR) that separates them from the Renegades above them and the Heat below them.

The Renegades also have four wins and eight points but have played a game fewer than their opponents. They also have a better NRR compared to their hosts, although that counts for nothing if the Thunder manage to eke out a large win.

This has been an encounter dominated by the Renegades. Of the six matches played so far between these sides, the Renegades have won five, including the last three. Most of these encounters have been lopsided which makes it interesting to see how this encounter might pan out.

Match Significance

This is the final game of the Big Bash season for the Thunder, who have not exactly found their top gear so far. A win will keep their hopes alive, although they would still have to worry about the Renegades’ last game of the season against the Brisbane Heat. A loss would be a knockout punch for the Shane Watson-led side.

The Renegades have one more match to go after this and their last game of the season against Brisbane Heat could well be a virtual quarter-final. However, the Renegades can solve that conundrum by winning this encounter.

Who’s Hot & Who’s Not?

The Thunder’s batting is led by their captain Watson (309 runs, avg. of 38.62, SR of 139.18) while Fawad Ahmed (11 wickets, economy of 6.05) is scorching the opponents with his spin. Their worry is the bowling ban on Arjun Nair (nine wickets, economy of 7.06) who was one of their early season top performers.

The Renegades’ batting is led by Cameron White (302 runs, avg. of 100.66, SR of 112.26) while Dwayne Bravo continues to lead their bowling charge (14 wickets). The worry for the Renegades is the lack of accountability in their middle-order beyond White’s runs. Marcus Harris (173 runs, avg. of 21.62, SR of 114.56) hasn’t really come to the party yet.

Tips and Predictions

Can the Thunder sneak into the finals? There is a very remote chance for the Thunder side, but they have shown in the recent matches that they can be a tough nut when the chips are down. Back the Thunder to win at odds of $1.90 (CrownBet).

The presence of James Vince and Usman Khawaja at the top gives hope to the Thunder to get a good start with the bat. Back them to come up with the highest opening partnership at odds of $1.73 (Sportsbet).

In the runs market, the Thunder captain Watson looks good to score at least 19 runs at odds of $1.83 (Ladbrokes).
