Sydney Sixers v Melbourne Stars Big Bash League Predictions and Match Preview - Wooden spoon battle of the bottom

Rippa Staff 22 Jan 2018
  • The Sixers have won their last three games
  • The Stars have won only once all tournament
  • The Sixers won with 4.5 overs to spare when the side met last week

The Sydney Sixers will take on the Melbourne Stars at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Tuesday, January 23 as the two sides battle to avoid the wooden spoon.

If you had to pick a game that isn’t top of your watching list this Big Bash, this would possibly be it. But it is a match that has ramifications for the players considering the contracts up for grabs, in the Big Bash and elsewhere.

The Sixers and the Stars are already guaranteed a spot in the bottom half of BBL07. That should, however, in an eerie way, spur the two sides to battle it out among themselves to avoid finishing bottom of the pile.

Match Preview

The Sixers have six points from nine matches and are on a three-match winning spree. At any other stage, that would have been a tournament-defining run. However, coming as it did after six consecutive losses, the Sixers can treat this as nothing but a Pyrrhic victory.

The Stars are in a worse situation, if there is one. They have just one win and two points from eight games and look as much a battered side as any. Their only chance of leaving the bottom of the table is in winning the remaining two matches. On current form, if they do that, it would be as good as winning the Big Bash.

The two sides met at the MCG last week when Nathan Lyon (3/18) and Sean Abbott (2/35) ran through the Stars to restrict them to 128/7. The target was then easily overhauled in 15.1 overs with Nic Maddinson (62 from 31 balls, 6X4, 5X6) running riot.

Match Significance

This is the final game of BBL07 for the Sixers, who couldn’t have asked for a better game to end their season – at home, against the Stars.

For the Stars, there is one more game left in the season after this, against the Hobart Hurricanes. Winning both the matches will help them avoid the last spot.

Who’s Hot & Who’s Not?

The Sixers haven’t had much success in the success to talk about. Maddinson (230 runs, avg. of 28.75, SR of 132.18) and Daniel Hughes (225 runs, avg. of 45, SR of 111.38) have been the lone beacons with the bat. Abbott (13 wickets) has been their top bowler, but it is the arrival of Lyon (three matches, six wickets) that has spurred them.

The Stars aren’t any different and only Glenn Maxwell (215 runs, avg. of 30.71, SR of 146.25) has aggregated over 200 for the side. With the ball, it has been a collective failure, as their top bowler has been John Hastings (six wickets), although it is the impressive Jackson Coleman (five wickets, economy of 6.62) who has done well in the recent matches.

Tips and Predictions

It is tough to separate these sides, although the Sixers have momentum on their side. They look good to end their tournament at home on a high. Back the Sixers to win at odds of $1.57 (Ladbrokes).

With a top-heavy artillery, the Sixers look good to score more in the first six overs at odds of $1.73 (William Hill).
