The second qualifier in the Indian Premier League will see a struggling Sunrisers Hyderabad take on a rampant Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday, May 25.

The Sunrisers topped the league standings, but lost out to Chennai Super Kings in a close encounter in the first qualifier. The Knight Riders swatted aside Rajasthan Royals in an interesting match at the same venue in the eliminator.

The winner will face Chennai Super Kings in the final on Sunday.

Match Preview

Hyderabad lost the first qualifier by two-wickets in Mumbai against Chennai. Batting first, the Sunrisers were reeling at 69/5, but recovered through a timely knock of 43 off 29 balls from Carlos Brathwaite to reach 139/7. Siddharth Kaul (2/32) put Hyderabad on top along with Rashid Khan (2/11) and at one stage they looked set for a win. A late charge from Faf du Plessis pushed Chennai to 140/8 condemning Hyderabad to the second qualifier.

Kane Williamson (685 runs, SR 143.60) has been spectacular for Hyderabad’s cause, while Shikhar Dhawan (437 runs, SR 139.17) has been adding a fine hand. However, the fact that they scored nearly 50% of the side’s runs so far, throws light on the inefficiencies of other batsmen.

Kolkata stormed to a 25-run win over Rajasthan in the eliminator, where they looked second-best for most part of the game. Overcoming a top-order wobble, Dinesh Karthik’s 52 off 38 and Andre Russell’s 49* off 25 led them to 169/7. The Royals looked in control at the beginning of the chase, but Kuldeep Yadav strangled them with figures of 1/18. Piyush Chawla contributed with 2/24 to restrict Rajasthan to 144/4 and guide Kolkata to this second qualifier.

Karthik (490 runs, SR 148.03) remains their best batsman of the season, while the form of all-rounders Sunil Narine (331 runs, 16 wickets) and Andre Russell (313 runs, 13 wickets) is a driving factor.

The sides shared the spoils earlier in the season, winning away from home. In Kolkata, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s 3/26 restricted Kolkata to 138/8. That proved just enough for the Sunrisers, who based their chase around Williamson’s 50 off 44 to reach 139/5 in 19 overs.

The reverse fixture saw Kolkata win a high-scoring encounter by five-wickets in Hyderabad. Dhawan’s 50 off 39 was overshadowed by Prasidh Krishna’s 4/30 as the Sunrisers scored 172/9. A calculated 55 off 43 from Chris Lynn helped Kolkata reach 173/5.

Key Players

After a season of exceptional bowling performances, Sunrisers have seen their death bowling rattle under pressure. They hope to see Bhuvneswar Kumar (ER 7.83) get back to his frugal best to address these concerns.

Karthik’s ability to soak up pressure and be his side’s smokescreen has pulled Kolkata out of many troubling scenarios this season. Like he showed against Rajasthan, his form is the driving force for the hosts.
