Sunrisers Hyderabad v Chennai Super Kings IPL Match Preview and Predictions - The playoff season begins

Rippa Staff 22 May 2018
  • The Playoff season begins
  • The Sunrisers take on the Chennai Super Kings

It’s the start of the playoff season and first up for us is a qualifier which will see Sunrisers Hyderabad take on Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, May 22.

Both sides have picked up nine wins and 18 points in the regular season. Loss of momentum in the later stages of the tournament is a worry, and there are no clear favourites for this match.

Match Preview

Chennai have been clinical in their last match, defeating Kings XI Punjab by five-wickets. Lungi Ngidi exploited the seamer-friendly conditions with a match-winning spell of 4/10 and Punjab stuttered to 153 all out. The chase could have been tricky, but MS Dhoni’s impressive batting changes helped them to 159/5. Suresh Raina top-scored with 61* off 48 balls, while Deepak Chahar impressed with 39 off 20.

The Super Kings continue to enjoy batting proficiency, led by the irrepressible Ambati Rayudu (586 runs, SR 153.40). Bowling concerns remain, but Deepak Chahar (nine wickets, ER 7.35) has been the find of their season.

Sunrisers were scratchy in their last match and stumbled to their third successive loss by five-wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders. Shikhar Dhawan with 50 off 39 and Kane Williamson with 36 off 17 helped Sunrisers reach 172/9. Siddharth Kaul with 2/26 tried to keep things interesting, but the Knight Riders strolled to 173/5 for an easy win.

Williamson (661 runs, SR 143.07) remains their shining beacon with the bat, while Kaul (17 wickets, ER 8.0) is their best bowling bet.

Both the encounters between these sides this season were won by the Super Kings. In Hyderabad, it was a Rayudu blitz (79 off 37) that helped Chennai post 182/3. Williamson tried his best to rally Hyderabad with 84 off 51, but Chahar’s 3/15 derailed their chase that ended at 178/6.

In the second match in Pune, Chennai scored an impressive eight-wicket win. Dhawan’s 79 off 49 helped the Sunrisers score 179/4, but Rayudu stroked his way to 100* off 62 to help Chennai stump Hyderabad.

Both sides have lost a bit of form leading to the playoffs, but remain strong enough to put in an effective performance.
